Last year I bought three different ashtrays from Art Of Christian. I noticed, the creator of this very cool and special cigar-ashtray lives only 5 km away from my business location. We met us last Wednesday in my lounge, to talk about his creations, cigars and this and that.

Letztes Jahr kaufte ich drei unterschiedliche Aschenbecher, für Zigarren, von Art Of Christian. Ich bemerkte, dass der Schöpfer dieses sehr coolen und speziellen Zigarren-Aschenbechers nur 5 km von meinem Geschäfststandort lebt. Wir trafen uns letzten Mittwoch in meiner Lounge um über seine Kreationen, Zigarren und dies & das zu sprechen.

Christian is Swiss, born 1968 in the canton Tessin and lives since a long time in Dübendorf, near Zurich. He is educated as precission engineer and he’s working in a small company, specialized in airplane-interiors, in Fällanden.
In his free time he designs different objects, like ashtrays, lamps, etc. But he doesn’t do only design. He is also responsible for the production of the objects. For this he needs a lot of time with testing and optimizing of a product. What is looking simple on paper can be hard when it comes to production.

Christian ist 1968, im Kanton Tessin, Schweiz, geboren und lebt seit längerer Zeit in Dübendorf, in der Nähe von Zürich. Er hat eine Ausbildung zum Feinmechaniker absolviert und arbeitet in einer kleinen Firma, in Fällanden, welche auf Ausbauten in Flugzeugen spezialisiert ist.
In seiner Freizeit entwirft er verschiedene Objekte, wie Aschenbecher, Lampen, etc. Aber er macht nicht nur das Design, sondern ist auch für die Produktion der Objekte verantwortlich. Für das Testen und optimieren eines Produkts benötigt er viel Zeit. Was auf Papier einfach ausschaut kann anspruchsvoll werden, wenn es um die Produktion geht.

Christian got the idea for the ashtray, as he was at the balcony to smoke a cigar. There was only a small ashtray for cigarettes and as he tried to strip the ash, he was thinking there must be better ways to handle the ash from a cigar. He designed an ashtray with a peak in the center of the hollow. With this it’s easy to handle the ash from a cigar in a perfect and esthetic way. Much more better than tapping the cigar at the rim of a cigarette-astray.
His ashtrays are looking very special. There are two lines, one is produced from a solid block of aluminium, the other one is from poured pewter.
The aluminium one is in a modern and high precision design. It’s made from a block of solid aluminium. First cutted with a water jet, afterwards at a lathe and rotary hoe. At the end it gets anodized. He is producing these in batches of ten pieces. All astrays from this line are produced in Switzerland.
The astray from pewter is produced in Mexico in batches of onehundred. This ashtray is looking more soft and it’s cheaper as its production is not as complex as the ashtray from aluminium.

Christian kam auf die Idee zum Aschenbecher, als er auf dem Balkon war, um eine Zigarre zu rauchen. Dort war nur ein Aschenbecher für Zigaretten vorhanden und als er versuchte die Asche abzustreifen dachte er, es müsse bessere Wege geben die Asche einer Zigarre zu handhaben. Er entwarf einen Aschenbecher mit einer Spitze im Zentrum der Mulde. Damit war es leicht die Asche einer Zigarre perfekt und ästhetisch einwandfrei zu behandeln. Viel besser als die Zigarre auf den Rand eines Zigaretten-Aschenbechers zu klopfen.
Seine Aschenbecher schauen sehr speziell aus. Es gibt zwei Linien, eine gefertigt aus solidem Aluminium, die andere gegossen aus Zinn.
Die aus Aluminium ist in einem modernen, hochpräzisions Design. Sie ist aus einem soliden Block Aluminium gefertigt. Zuerst mit einem Wasserstrahl herausgeschnitten, danach auf einer Drehbank und Fräse weiter bearbeitet. Am Ende werden sie eloxiert. Er produziert diese in Zehner-Einheiten. Alle Aschenbecher aus dieser Linie werden in der Schweiz produziert.
Der Aschenbecher aus Zinn wird in Mexiko in Hunderter-Serien gefertigt. Dieser Aschenbecher schaut weicher aus und ist günstiger, da dessen Produktion nicht so komplex ist, wie die des Aluminium-Aschenbechers.

If a customer is interested in a customized ashtray – it’s possible. The one of aluminium can be anodized in other colours, or the surface can be extended with Swarovski cristals. Engravings are applicable.
Or should the asthtray hold more cigars? That’s possible too! I saw plans with a model with six branches.
You need one from another material? No problem, if you want you can have one from solid gold or palladium – depending on the size of your wallet.

Wenn ein Kunde an einem speziell gefertigten Aschenbecher interessiert ist – es ist möglich. Der aus Aluminium kann in einer anderen Farbe eloxiert werden, oder die Oberfläche kann mit Swarovski-Kristallen erweitert werden. Gravuren sind möglich.
Oder soll der Aschenbecher mehr Zigarren halten können? Auch das ist möglich! Ich habe Pläne eines Modells mit sechs Armen gesehen.
Sie benötigen einen aus einem anderen Material? Kein Problem, wenn Sie wollen können sie einen aus massivem Gold oder Palladium haben – abhängig von der Grösse Ihrer Brieftasche.

Christian is experimenting with other materials than metal. Metal is complex to handle, but stone is much more complex. Stone can be damaged more through the tools of modern machines. Because stone is variant in it’s inner structure and not as homogenous as metal. The tool itself can be damaged by stone, especially when it is very hard.

Christian experimentiert mit anderen Materialen als Metall. Metall ist komplex zu handhaben, aber Stein ist noch viel komplexer. Stein kann viel leichter durch die Werkzeuge moderner Maschinen beschädigt werden. Weil Stein abweichend in seiner inneren Struktur und nicht so homogen wie Metall ist. Das Werkzeug selbst kann durch Stein beschädigt werden, speziell wenn er sehr hart ist.
