Cigar rings have always fascinated me, even as a child. I collected them back then, but they didn’t survive until I was a full-grown aficionado. At some point I started keeping them again, as my personal register of sins, so to speak. However, I wasn’t always consistent. Sometimes I damaged them when taking them off, other times I forgot them in the breast pocket of my shirt, where they were crushed and the washing machine did the rest. Nevertheless, there have been many over the years and I am pleased to dedicate my little stop-motion movie ‘just a few of my cuban cigar sins’ to them as a thank you for the wonderful hours of enjoyment we spent together.
…and by the way, in good old movie tradition, there is an ‘Easter egg’ hidden in the movie – who can find it? . . . Zigarrenringe haben mich schon als Kind immer fasziniert. Ich habe sie schon damals gesammelt, doch haben sie die Zeit bis ich ein ausgewachsener Aficionado war nicht überlebt. Irgendwann habe ich wieder damit angefangen sie aufzubewahren, sozusagen als mein persönliches Sündenregister. Jedoch war ich nicht immer konsequent. Manchmal habe ich sie beim abmontieren beschädigt, dann wieder Mal in der Brusttasche des Hemdes vergessen, wo sie zerquetscht wurden und ihnen die Waschmaschine danach den Rest gab. Trotzdem sind es über die Jahre viele geworden und es freut mich ihnen meinen kleinen StopMotion Film ‘just a few of my cuban cigar sins’ zu widmen als Dank für die schönen genüsslichen Stunden, die wir zusammen verbracht haben.
…und übrigens ist, in guter alter Film-Tradition, ein ‘Easter egg’ im Film versteckt – wer findet’s?
An afternoon with friends: First a Lafite Rothschild 1961 (my and my colleague’s vintage). Opening it was a delicate affair. The cork was very shaky as it had never been recorked. But the fiddling and decanting were worth it. It was wonderful to drink. Fragile aromas, somewhat medicinal, long finish. It remained stable over the entire drinking period and even gained a little with the air, which is by no means a matter of course for a wine of this age. For dessert, we had a Vegas Robaina Unicos 2000 from a box signed by Don Alejandro and a Monte 2 from 2012. It was a successful and entertaining afternoon with great conversation and lots of enjoyment. . . . Ein Nachmittag mit Freunden: Zuerst ein Lafite Rothschild 1961 (mein und des Kollegen Jahrgang). Ihn zu öffnen war eine delikate Sache. Der Korken war sehr morsch, da er nie rekorkt wurde. Aber die Fummelei und das dekantieren haben sich gelohnt. Er war wunderbar zu trrinken. Fragile Aromen, etwas medizinal, langer Abgang. Er hielt sich über ich die gesamte Trinkdauer stabil und gewann durch die Luft sogar noch etwas, was durchaus nicht selbstverständlich für ein Wein dieses Alters ist. Zum Dessert gab es eine Vegas Robaina Unicos 2000, aus einer von Don Alejandro signierten Kiste und eine Monte 2 aus 2012. Das war ein gelungener und kurzweiliger Nachmittag mit tollen Gesprächen und viel Genuss.
This cigar is very well made and a real pleasure. A perfect draw and a wonderful flavor profile. Halfway through I started to feel the nicotine. Oh – it has a very large amount of it and surprisingly despite its age of almost 16 years! I have rarely experienced that. I was wide awake well into the morning. So for me personally, this cigar is more of a daytime or afternoon cigar, or just before a night shift. Its large nicotine load leads to a wide awake state with a razor-sharp mind – but always pleasant.
Dimensions: Ring gauge 50, length 155mm (6⅛″) Box Date: TEB UUL08 Cold draw: Hay, gingerbread, cinnamon, perfect draw Smoke flavor: Full body, perfect draw, some white pepper which increases steadily during smoking, and a fine sweetness of honey on top. Points: 93/100 . . . Diese Zigarre ist sehr gut gemacht und eine wahre Freude. Ein perfekter Zug und ein wunderbares Aromaprofil. Nach der Hälfte habe ich angefangen das Nikotin zu spühren. Oh – sie hat eine sehr grosse Menge davon und das erstaunlicherweise trotz ihres Alters von fast 16 Jahren! Das habe ich selten erlebt. Ich war bis in den Morgen hinein hellwach. Darum ist diese Zigarre für mich persönlich eher eine Tages- oder früher Nachmittag-Zigarre, oder kurz vor einer Nachtschicht. Ihre grosse Nikotinfracht führt zu einem hellwachen Zustand mit messerscharfem Verstand – doch immer angenehm.

Cigars and the UK probably bring Winston Churchill to mind for most people. His passion for cigars is still present today and who can claim that a cigar format is named after him – Chuchill and cigars are one and the same, so to speak.
Of course, the UK has a long, great cigar tradition. Not only that, but the city of London breathes history from every stone it is built on. Heritage and tradition are proudly upheld here.
I’ve been to London a few times on business. Unfortunately, my schedule was always so busy that there was absolutely no room for cigars. As a private individual, I now have the luxury of time for my passion for cigars and can make up for missed opportunities. . . . Zigarren und UK, da kommen den meisten wahrscheinlich Winston Churchill in den Sinn. Seine Zigarren-Passion ist auch heute noch allgegenwärtig und wer kann schon von sich behaupter, dass ein Zigarren-Format nach seinem Namen benannt ist – Churchill und Zigarren sind sozusagen eins.
Natürlich hat UK eine lange, grosse Zigarren Tradition. Und nicht nur das, die Stadt London atmet Geschichte aus jedem Stein auf dem sie gebaut ist. Erbe und Tradition werden hier mit Stolz hochgehalten.
Ich war früher einige Male geschäftlich in London. Dummerweise war mein Zeitplan immer so voll getaktet, dass das Thema Zigarren leider absolut keinen Raum hatte. Als Privatier habe ich nun den Luxus Zeit für meine Zigarren-Passion zu haben und früher verpasste Gelegenheiten etwas auszugleichen.

As I was taking my son with me on the trip, I couldn’t just think about cigars, of course. He really wanted to use a Hop On – Hop Off bus, which is not a bad way to get a quick overview. We got off near Harrods. There was something for both of us. He could spend time in the big department store and I could spend time in the J. J. Fox lounge. After Harrods, I went to Sautter Cigars and looked around for about 10 minutes. . . . Da ich meinen Sohn mit auf die Reise genommen habe konnte ich natürlich nicht nur an Zigarren denken. Er wollte unbedingt einen Hop On – Hop Off Bus benutzen, was nicht Mal so schlecht ist um einen kurzen Überblick zu erhalten. In der Nähe von Harrods sind wir ausgestiegen. Da gab es für uns beide etwas. Er konnte sich im grossen Kaufhaus und ich mich in der Lounge von J. J. Fox verweilen. Nach Harrods ging ich zu Sautter Cigars und sah mich dort nur ca. 10 Minuten um. . . .

My first destination was actually CGars St James’s. The cab dropped me off at J.J. Fox and explained that CGars, St. James, was in the next cross street. OK – well, if I’m already at J.J. Fox, why not take a quick look inside? The people were very friendly and introduced me to their selection of cigars. Then I went to the lower floor. There they had a small museum with exhibits of Winston Churchill and other cigar-related objects. Last but not least, I was allowed to visit the cigar lounge on the upper floor. If I’d had time, it would have been nice to smoke a cigar.
After J.J. Fox, I went to CGars, St James’s. I had registered with Luiz Murano in advance. He gave me a friendly welcome and we talked about the cigar market in the UK and cigar auctions. Their auctions take place every few months and are an event for collectors from all over the world. They are also a valuable source of information for finding out cigar prices for rare cigars or creating a customized sales strategy for the (partial) sale of an extensive cigar collection. In short, CGars is a reference point for the sale of cigars. Last but not least, I smoked a Bolivar New Gold Medal in the lounge and met two Londoners. I had a nice and interesting conversation with them. As often happens with cigars: They are a catalyst that brings people from different cultures together. . . . Mein erstes Ziel war eigentlich CGars, St. James. Das Taxi hat mich bei J.J. Fox abgesetzt und erklärt, dass sich CGars, St. James, in der nächsten Querstrasse befindet. OK – nun wenn ich schon bei J.J. Fox bin wieso nicht kurz reinschauen? Die Leute waren sehr freundlich und haben mir ihre Zigarrenauswahl vorgestellt. Danach ging es in das untere Stockwerk. Da hatten sie ein kleines Museum mit Ausstellungsstücken von Winston Churchill und anderen zigarrenbezogenen Objekten. Zu guter letzt durfte ich die Zigarren-Lounge im oberen Stockwerk anschauen. Wenn ich Zeit gehabt hätte, wäre es schön gewesen eine Zigarre zu rauchen.
Nach J.J. Fox ging ich zu CGars, St. James. Im Vorfeld hatte ich mich bei Luiz Murano angemeldet. Er hat mich freundlich empfangen und wir haben uns über den Zigarrenmarkt in UK und Zigarren-Auktionen unterhalten. Deren Auktionen finden alle paar Monate statt und sind jeweils ein Ereignis für Sammler aus der ganzen Welt. Sie sind auch eine wertvolle Informationsquelle um die Zigarrenpreise für Raritäten in Erfahrung zu bringen, oder eine massgeschneiderte Verkaufsstrategie für den (Teil-)Verkauf einer umfangreichen Zigarrensammlung zu entwerfen. Kurz gesagt CGars ist ein Refernzpunkt für den Verkauf von Zigarren. Zu guter letzt habe ich noch eine Bolivar New Gold Medal in der Lounge geraucht und zwei Londoner kennengelernt. Ich hatte ein schönes und interessantes Gespräch mit ihnen. So wie es öfters mit Zigarren geschieht: Sie sind ein Katalysator, der Menschen aus den verschiedensten Kulturen zusammenbringt. . . .

After doing a few more things with my junior, I went to the lounge of A.J. Patel – No. 6 Cavendish. They had an excellent selection of rarities and aged cigars. The lounge was very spacious and the interior design was perfect down to the last detail. Really impressive. . . . Nachdem ich mit meinem Junior noch ein paar Dinge unternommen hatte ging ich in die Lounge von A.J. Patel – No. 6 Cavendish. Sie hatten eine hervorragende Auswahl von Raritäten und gereiften Zigarren. Die Lounge war sehr grosszügig ausgelegt und bis ins perfekte Detail innenarchitektonisch umgesetzt. Wirklich beeindruckend. . . .

We had our flight back to Zurich shortly after midday. Unfortunately, we had to turn back on the way to the airport because I had left my smartphone at the hotel. In the end, everything went well. My son and I have very fond and positive memories of our time in London. I’m 100% sure I’ll be back, because I haven’t visited all the cigar-related places yet. I have signed up for the Habanos World Days in London on June 21-22 and am looking forward to attending with my wife. . . . Kurz nach Mittag hatten wir unseren Flug zurück nach Zürich. Leider mussten wir auf der Fahrt zum Flughafen umkehren, weil ich mein Smartphone im Hotel liegen gelassen hatte. Letztendlich ist alles gut gegangen. Ich und mein Sohn denken sehr gerne und positiv an die Tage London zurück. Dass ich wieder kommen werde ist zu 100% gewiss, denn ich habe noch längst nicht alle zigarren-bezogenen Orte besucht. An die Habanos World Days in London, vom 21.-22. Juni, habe ich mich angemolden und freue mich mit meiner Frau daran teilzunehen.

I recently made the ‘acquaintance’ of a cigar scammer. A friend pointed out to me that the user Habanos_cigar_collector was misusing images and texts from my posts on Instagram. After a quick visit to his Instagram account, I realized that he was misusing a lot of my posts.
This prompted me to contact him under an alternative user and ‘play’ with him a little. Specifically, I was interested in my own Cohiba Maduro Humidor 167/500. . . . Ich durfte letzthin mit einem Zigarren Scammer ‘Bekanntschaft’ machen. Ein Freund hat mich darauf hingewiesen, dass Auf Instagram der Benutzer Habanos_cigar_collector Bilder und Texte aus meinen Posts missbraucht. Nach kurzer Visite seines Instagram Accounts musste ich in der Tat feststellen, dass er vieles aus meinen Posts missbräuchlich verwendet.

Nach dem ersten Kontakt mit Preisanfrage hat er mir einen Preis von USD 180 offeriert! Das ist erstaunlich, wenn man bedenkt, dass dieser Humidor, im Jahr 2013, CHF 3’500 gekostet hat. Mit der stattgefundenen Preisentwicklung bei den kubanischen Zigarren dürfte der heutige Wert geschätzt 15 – 20k betragen, da davon nur 500 Stück weltweit produziert wurden. Vielleicht denkt er, Zigarren würden über die Zeit schlechter und verlieren an Wert? Nun ich glaube eher, dass er hinten und vorne null Ahnung von kubanischen Zigarren hat. Da das Spiel so hübsch gestartet hat probierte ich den Preis hinaufzutreiben, nach dem Motto ‘schauen wir Mal wo wir landen’. Als ich ihn gefragt habe ob es ein Schreibfehler sei, hat er auf USD 1’800.– nachgebessert. Als ich geschrieben habe, dass es eher 18’000.– seien, sonst müsse es eine Fälschung sein, wollte er seinen Chef fragen. Leider habe ich nichts mehr gehört. But I decided against it because then it seems to me like the cigar boxes with all those ugly warning stickers on them. . . . Bezüglich meiner Bilder hatte ich zuerst überlegt nun überall ein sichtbares Wasserzeichen zu nutzen. Doch habe ich mich dagegen entschieden, weil es mir dann so vorkommt wie mit den Zigarrenkistchen auf denen all diese hässlichen Warnkleber aufgeklebt sind.

Registering as a new customer, including the new customer check, was quick and easy and therefore professional. As they happen to have almost the same name as my blog, I asked them via their chat about the possible name confusion. They answered me immediately and are relaxed about it.

I had looked in from time to time and decided to create a user account with my @cigar.land mail domain on 17.02.2024. Registration was easy. I clicked on the confirmation link via email straight away. But I couldn’t log in until the admin had checked it. But I never received an admin activation. On the contrary, my account was blocked after one day! I did not receive a reply to my message requesting activation. So I clicked on the confirmation link in the e-mail again. Same game again: Admin approval status, after one or two days another blocked user account. So I wrote again and again got no reply. So I clicked the activation link in the e-mail again – same game all over again! In the end, another blocked account. When I tried to write a message for the third time, I realized that this was no longer possible! The certificate key for the captcha generator has expired! It’s been like this for several days now – how very unprofessional for a commercial website!
The website rarely, if ever, seems to be maintained: An announcement regarding the year 2021 is still prominently displayed, even though it is now 2024! With these, my experiences, the question arises as to whether they invest any time at all in identifying counterfeits. What happens in the event of a dispute between buyer and seller – are they left to their own devices, is the maintenance of the website/web server so inadequate that sooner or later there could be a security problem, etc., etc.? To me, it all seems more like a side money-making machine by some guys who want to invest little but cash in (as long as they don’t drive away potential customers from the outset).

Wieder dasselbe Spiel: Admin approval Status, nach ein bis zwei Tagen wieder ein gesperrtes Benutzerkonto. Also habe ich nochmale geschrieben und bekam wieder keine Antwort. Also nochmals Aktivierungslink im E-Mail – dasselbe Spiel von vorn! Am Ende wieder ein gesperrter Account. Als ich zum dritten Mal eine Nachricht verfassen wollte musste ich feststellen, dass dies nicht mehr möglich ist! Der Zertifikatsschlüssel beim Captcha-Generator ist abgelaufen! Das ist nun seit mehreren Tagen so – wie überaus unprofessionell für eine kommerzielle Website! Die Webseite scheint selten, wenn überhaupt gewartet zu werden: Eine Ankündigung, das Jahr 2021 betreffend, steht immer noch prominent da, obwohl wir mittlerweile das Jahr 2024 haben!? Mit diesen, meinenen Erfahrungen, stellt sich mir die Frage ob sie überhaupt Zeit investieren um Fälschungen zu identifizieren. Was geschieht bei einem Streit zwischen Käufer und Verkäufer – werden sie sich selbst überlassen, ist die Wrtung der Webseite / des Webservers so ungenügend, dass es früher oder später ein Sicherheitsproblem geben könnte, etc., etc.? Mir macht das alles eher den Eindruck einer nebenbei Geldmachine einiger Jungs, die wenig investieren aber kassieren möchten (sofern sie mögliche Kunden nicht von vornherein vertreiben).
Testweise habe ich noch einen weiteren Account, mit einer anderen Mail-Domäne angelegt das hat funktioniert. Nur werde ich diesen nie nutzen. Somit können leider keine Geschäfte mit Bond Roberts stattfinden, was deren Mitbewerber, die mir nicht so feindlich gesinnt sind, freuen dürfte. . . .

Temperature and humidity control / monitoring are very important elements for the correct storage of cigars. I have experimented a lot over the years: Started with a simple analog hygrometer, expanded with digital hygrometers, increased with professional precision wireless measurement probes, surpassed with IoT sensors based on LoRaWAN en masse. Ah yes, and then there was also a brief experiment with sensors from Boveda, which were later discontinued. For a while now, I’ve been working on the integration of Apple Home (aka Homekit). The short video illustrates the result of a humidor integration into home automation. It’s very simple – and how? – I’ll be happy to explain this in detail later on this blog.

As we got our new rings from Obsession, the ring of my wife Yacquelin was a bit to large. Both rings had no engravings, because the production time was to short. After beeing back from the XVIII Festival del Habano the ring of her should be rebuilt and both should be engraved. What we didn’t know at the moment, these rings should never get their engarvings…
Within five hours Yacquelin lost her ring in the kitchen. With a fast movement of her hand the ring dropped from her finger and flew somewhere. We heard a short, dry, dump ‘clack’. We searched inside the whole kitchen and outside the house, because the window was a little bit open, but we could not find the ring. At the end we ordered help from craftsmen who dismounted several parts in the kitchen, like moving the fridge outside it’s cover, etc. At the end we had to accept it’s lost.
At March 12, 2016 I turned back from Cuba and the XVIII Festival del Habano. At the Air France flight AF0943 from Habana to Paris I had to visit the restroom. As I washed my hands I pulled the ring from my finger and forgot to push it back before I returned to my seat. I noticed this a short while after and moved back to the restroom. The ring was not there anymore, somebody tooked it. I asked the crew to help me and they did an announcement in English, French and Spanish. But the person who took the ring has decided to not give it back for a finders fee. From the perspective of the insurance the announcement has turned the finding into a qualified theft. With this, they gave me a partial compensation for the expenses of the ring. But at the end Yacqui and I don’t had a second time no more wedding bands. We had to order a new set. After one month we had our new rings and a week later a priest blessed them. We hope the new rings will last forever.
I would give a reward of USD 3’000.– for the recovery of stolen goods and the seize of the thief. The ring is from pure 18k gold with black appliances of colorit. Inside the ring is the following signet from the manufacturer: OSO 850 (worldwide unique). The dimensions are: Diameter 70.5 (23mm inside) height 13mm, thicknes 2mm, The ring is absolutely unique and the manufacturer would never produce it for other people. Wie ich in früheren Blog-Posts geschrieben hatte, haben ich und meine Frau Hochzeitsringe, welche von einem Zigarrenband ‘Edición Limitada 2015’ inspiriert sind. Zu allererst bekamen wir eine sehr unerfreuliche und unprofessionelle Arbeit von Koenig Design AG, Zürich präsentiert. Am Ende fanden wir einen zuverlässigen Partner in der Goldschmiede Obsession, Zürich. Aber das ist nicht alles… die Geschichte geht weiter.
As we got our new rings from Obsession, the ring of my wife Yacquelin was a bit to large. Both rings had no engravings, because the production time was to short. After beeing back from the XVIII Festival del Habano the ring of her should be rebuilt and both should be engraved. What we didn’t know at the moment, these rings should never get their engarvings…

Am XVIII Festival del Habano bekamen wir nicht nur Zigarren. Wir bekamen auch verschiedene Goodies mit Bezuga auf Zigarren, wie Käppis, Taschen, Feuerzeuge, Zigarrenschneider, etc. Ein Teil davon wird nie in den regulären Markt gebracht.
