Today 17:14 (UTC +1) I received the latest update on the Habanos World Days in London.

Hunters & Frankau have announced the official cigar menu for each event. For my taste a really excellent selection of beautiful Trinidad cigars.

Hunters & Frankau haben das offizielle Zigarren-Menu für jeden Event bekanntgegeben. Für meinen Geschmack eine wirklich exzellente Auswahl an wunderschönen Trinidad Zigarren.

What I noticed is that the Gala Dinner was fully booked a few days ago. Now it seems to have places again. Whether the event has been enlarged, people have to move closer together or places have become available is beyond my knowledge. In any case, it’s worth booking quickly.

Was mir aufgefallen ist, das Gala Dinner war vor ein paar Tagen ausgebucht. Nun hat es scheinbar wieder Plätze. Ob der Event vergrössert wurde, die Leute betwas mehr zuisammenrücken müssen, oder Plätze frei geworden sind entzieht sich meiner Kenntnis. Eine schnelle Buchung lohnt sich in jedem Fall.

Meanwhile I smoked the Hoyo de Monterrey – Le Hoyo de San Juan six times, during differnt daytimes. Two of them were pre-production samples, four of them from different boxes of the released cigar. All boxdates are EML JUL14.
The dimension of the cigar is: Type Geniales, ring 54, lenght 149.2mm. The tobacco is from the region of San Juan y Martinez. The price for a slide lid box of 25 cigars is CHF 445.-.

Mittlerweile habe ich die Hoyo de Monterrey – Le Hoyo de San Juan sechs mal, zu verschiedenen Tageszeiten, geraucht. Zwei davon waren Muster aus der Vorproduktion, vier waren aus verschiedenen Kisten der auf dem Markt erhältlichen Zigarre. Alle Verpackungsdaten sind EML JUL14.
Die Dimension der Zigarre ist: Format Geniales, Ring 54, Länge 149.2mm. Der Tabak kommt aus der Region San Juan y Martinez. Der Preis einer 25er Zigarren-Kiste mit Schiebedeckel ist CHF 445.-.

Yesterday I bought additional boxes from the Hoyo de Monterrey – Le Hoyo de San Juan. As I met Rodi M. Valdés, Director General, of the La Corona cigarfactory in Havana again, he signed me seven boxes, with the confirmation, they are from the first production / first market release.
Two of them have an additional dedication ‘For my beloved son…’ at one side, beceause the release date is at his birthday. At his 18th birthday he gets these and with a little bit of luck we smoke one together.

Gestern kaufte ich zusätzliche Kisten der Hoyo de Monterrey – Le Hoyo de San Juan. Da ich Rodi M. Valdés, Director General, der La Corona Zigarrenfabrik in Havanna erneut traf, signierte er mir die sieben Kisten mit der Bestätigung, dass sie aus der ersten Produktion / der ersten Markteinführung stammen.
Zwei von ihnen haben, auf der Seite, eine zusätzliche Widmung ‘Für meinen geliebten Sohn…’, weil das Veröffentlichungsdatum seinem Geburtstag entspricht. An seinem 18. Geburtstag bekommt er diese und mit ein bisschen Glück rauchen wir eine zusammen.

The cigar has a middle-brown , good quality wrapper. It’s tends more to flat than oily. In the cold draw it tastes like gingerbread, fig and has a huge sweetnes. The drawing resistance is perfect.

Die Zigarre hat ein mittelbraunes Deckblatt von guter Qualität. Es tendiert eher zu matt denn ölig. Im Kaltzug schmeckt sie nach Lebkuchen, Feigen und besitzt eine starke Süsse. Der Zugwiderstand ist perfekt.

The first puff presents a voluminous smoke with a huge sweetnes and it’s creamy / buttered. It’s a light cigar. After the first puff the cigar gets closed in the falvour. This could be expected as the boxdate is JUL14.

Der erste Zug präsentiert einen voluminösen Rauch mit einer starken Süsse und cremigkeit / buttrigkeit: Nach dem ersten Zug verschliesst sich die Zigarre im Aroma. Dies war zu erwarten, da das Verpackungsdatum JUL14 ist.

The ash is gray-white and compact. It tastes like a mix of woods and hints of gras. Ammonia influences the taste in the first third. The burn is inconsistent and has to be fixed with the lighter.

Die Asche ist grau-weiss und kompakt. Sie schmeckt nach Hölzermischung und Spuren von Gras. Ammoniak beeinflusst das Aroma im ersten Drittel. Der Abbrand ist inkonsistent und muss mit dem Feuerzeug korrigiert werden.

The second third: Grassy, grassy, grassy and some mix of woods. the sweetnes comes back, hints of white pepper. The burn is inconsistent and has to be fixed with the lighter again.

In the last third it gets stronger. The sweetnes is present. The flavour is covered. It’s a little bit adstringent now.

Summary:

The two pre production cigars were full of aroma. The market released cigars are very sealed. The cigar has to be stored for some time to develop their full potential. When it develops like the pre-production examples it will be a great smoke indeed.

Die zwei Zigarren vor der Produktion waren voll von Aroma. Die auf den Markt gekommensen Zigarren sind sehr verschlossen. Die Zigarre muss für eine Zeit gelagert werden um ihr volles Potential zu entfalten. Wenn sie sich wie die vorproduktions Muster entwickeln, wird sie ein ein hervorragendes Rauchvergnügen.

Book presentation – Partagas – The Book

At June 20, I went with my girlfriend, Yacqui, to Urs Portman’s tabac-shop. Amir Saarony, the famous Canadian author of a the very genius book, ‘Partagas – The Book / Partagas El Libro’ was there. I bought his book some times ago, and this was the chance to meet the author live, let him sign the book and change some words with him.
It was a really relaxing and enjoyable event. Urs served us fine cigars, as usual. Amir signed me four books, two for me, one for Yacqui and one, as birthday-present, for my best friend marc. We talked a lot about cigars, why he has made this book and what his next project will be. Very interesting was the discussion, about the new book from Min Ron NEE, the aspect of ‘elite books’ and how much a book should cost. Heiko Blumentritt a good friend of Amir was also there. Heiko is a well known cigar blogger and I was many times at his blog and enjoyed the interesting informations he shares with the community.
At the end we changed to Urs’ cigar-longe, where a small buffet and Amir’s short and interesting presentation about the Partagas-History, he had in front of an audience, taked place.
It was very enjoyable and I’m very interested in the next book Amir will release – as an aficionado and writer – for aficionados.

Am 20. Juni ging ich mit meiner Freundin Yacqui zu Urs Portmann’s Tabak-Geschäft. Amir Saarony, der bekannte Author des Buches ‘Partagas – The Book / Partagas – El Libro’, war dort zu Besuch. Ich kaufte das Buch vor einiger Zeit und dies war die Gelegenheit ihn zu treffen, das Buch signieren zu lassen und sich mit ihm auszutauschen.
Es war ein entspannter Anlass zum geniessen. Urs versorgte uns mit feinen Zigarren, wie immer. Amir hat mir vier Bücher signiert, zwei für mich, eines für Yacqui und eines, als Geburtstags-Geschenk, für meinen besten Freund Marc. Wir sprachen viel über Zigarren, warum er ein Buch machte und was sein und was sein nächstes Projekt sein wird. Sehr interessant war die Diskussion über das neue Buch von Min Ron NEE, über den Aspekt von Büchern für eine Elite und wie viel ein Buch kosten sollte. Nebst Amir war ein guter Freund von ihm, Heiko Blumentritt, anwesend. Heiko ist ein bekannter Zigarren-Blogger, auf dessen Blog ich viele male seine Informationen, die er mit der Community teilt, genossen habe.
Am Ende wechselten wir in die Smokers-Lounge von Urs, wo es ein kleines Buffet und eine kurze, interessante Präsentation von Amir, über die Partagas-Geschichte gab.
Es war ein sehr genüsslicher Anlass und ich bin sehr gespannt auf das nächste Buch von Amir – von einem Aficionado und Schriftsteller – für Aficionados.

Review – Davidoff Nicaragua Short Corona

At saturday 12 July, 2014 I bought a box of Davidoff Nicaragua Short Corona.
The advertising found on some websites let me dream about a perfect smoke who dosn’t last to long, if there isn’t enough time for a large cigar.
Here is one marketing example for the Davidoff Nicaragua Short Corona:
Davidoff Nicaragua cigars were inspired by Zino Davidoff’s pioneering spirit, Davidoff’s master blenders went on an exploration for a new type of blend that would stimulate both the bitter and sweet taste buds. Finally, they found it in Nicaragua’s ultra-rich volcanic soil. It took 10 years of patient curing and aging to tame the wilder tendencies of of these tobaccos. Arguably one of THE BEST Nicaraguan puros ever made! The smoke is creamy smooth, complex and aromatic.

As I know in marketing are superlatives used, most times, and at the end it doesn’t reflect the product truly. Especially in all the things related to the taste. It’s very personel what is good or not.

Am Samstag 12. Juli 2014 habe ich eine Kiste Davidoff Nicaragua Short Corona gekauft.
Die Werbung, die ich auf einigen Webseiten gefunden habe, lassen mich vom perfekten, kurzen Rauchgenuss träumen, wenn nicht genug Zeit für ein grösseres Zigarren-Format besteht.
Hier ist ein Marketing-Beispiel über die Davidoff Nicaragua Short Corona:

Ich weiss, dass Marketing teilweise Superlativen verwendet die am Ende mit dem Produkt nichts zu tun haben. Speziell bei all den Dingen die mit Geschmack zu tun haben. Es ist eben sehr persönlich was gut ist oder nicht.

. The cigar has a light drawing resistance. It has a middle brown colour. Unfortunately the wrapper is damaged. I think this should not reflect the high Davidoff quality standards. It tastes a little bit like honey and smoked bacon – this is very nice.

Die Zigarre hat einen leichten Zugwiderstand. Die Farbe ist Mittelbraun. Leider ist das Deckblatt beschädigt. Ich denke dies refelktiert nicht die hohen Davidoff Qualitätsstandards. Der Kaltzug schmeckt etwas nach Honig und geräuchertem Speck.
.The first puff offers a mild creamy smoke, some hints of barbecue (grilled lamb), fine tobacco flavours, it’s very mild in taste.

Der erste Zug präsentiert einen cremigen Rauch, einige Spuren von Barbecue (gegrilltes Lamm), feine Tabakaromen, sie ist sehr mild im Geschmack.
. A hint of mild wooden flavours, but at all near no flavour – boring.

Einen Hauch von mildem Geschmack nach Hölzern, aber fast kein Geschmack – langweilig.
. Unfortunately it was not possible to tear the cigar-band off without damage.

Leider war es nicht möglich die Anilla abzuziehen, ohne die Zigarre zu beschädigen.

Schmeckt etwas nach trockenem Karton – und langweilig.

Sie wird ein bisschen Stärker, etwas Süsse, sehr leicht.

Ich bin glücklich, dieses langweilige Zigarre hinter mir zu lassen.
.After the first smoke was not what I expected I retasted the cigar four hours later. The quality of the cigar was not perfect again. The cut at the end of the foot was not like it should be. It looked like a sinkhole.
The cigar was stronger this time but not superb. It was dominated by linearity and it was boring too.

Nachdem die erste Rauchprobe enttäuschend war, habe ich nach vier Stunden eine weitere geraucht. Die Qualität der Zigarre war ebenfalls nicht perfekt. Der Schnitt am Ende des Fusses war nicht wie er sein sollte. Er schaute wie ein Krater aus.
Dieses mal war die Zigarre stärker aber nicht hervorragend. Sie wurde ebenfalls von Linearität und Langeweile dominiert.

CONCLUSION

This cigar and me are definite not friends. Both cigars were absolutely boring for me. With a price of CHF 11.50 it’s definitively to expensive. There are better cigars, for a short smoke on the market, like H.Upmann Half Corona (CHF 5.20, Vegueros Mañanitas (CHF 5.50). Some marketing is lightyears away from the real product!
I have still 12 sticks and will retaste it. If there is any significant change, I will publish the new review immediately.

KONKLUSION

Diese Zigarre und ich sind definitiv keine Freunde. Beide Zigarren ware absolut langweilig für mich. Mit einem Preis von CHF 11.50 ist sie definitiv zu teuer. Da gibt es bessere Zigarren für ein kurzes Rauchvergnügen auf dem Markt, wie H. Upmann Half Corona (CHF 5.20) und Vegueros Mañanitas (CHF 5.50). Einzelnes Marketing ist Lichtjahre vom realen Produkt entfernt!
Ich habe noch 12 Zigarren und werde sie nochmals testen. Wenn sich signifikante Änderungen ergeben werde ich diese umgehend publizieren.

Impressions Big Smoke 2014 – Zurich

The weekend of June 28, me and my girlfriend, visited the Big Smoke 2014. This is a huge smokers event in Switzerland, in the ‘Fischer’s Fritz‘, at the lake Zurich. This is a good opportunity to meet old and find new friends, to enjoy an evening in the sign of smoke. The location for such an event is really perfect. You can choose to talk with old or new friends, or take a walk beside the lake, if you prefer the sound of silence.
All was well organized. At the entrance we got three coins for cigars, three cards for drinks, and one card for jetons to play at the mobile casino from Grand Casino Baden. Food and wine was free, as much as we liked. The different cigar- and spirit-brands had each a booth. For cigars the representatives from Brun del Ré, Camacho, Intertabak (Cohiba, Montecristo, Partagas), OSA, Patoro were there. With the coins or cards we were able to chose the stuff we liked most. As I smoke cuban cigars the most times, I was interested to try Camacho, OSA and Patoro. At the end I had one of my own carried cigars, a Montecristo 520, EDL 2012. The preferred beverages were wine and Mojito.
For entertainment a band played music in caribbean style and in the mobile casino we could play Roulette or with cards. I tried Roulette and won ten times my first stake. But there was no money when I exchanged the coins. I got only a chaep bottle of Mövenpick Champagne. The weather at the beginning of the event was good, but at the end it was a strong, stormy rain with a lot of water.
The event was very nice and I will go again, if it happens next year.

Das Wochenende vom 28. Juni besuchten ich und meine Freundin, den Big Smoke 2014. Dies ist ein grosser Raucher-Anlass, im ‘Fischer’s Fritz‘, beim Zürichsee. Dies ist eine gute Gelegenheit alte und neue Freunde zu finden und den Abend im Zeichen des Rauches zu geniessen. Der Veranstaltungsort für solch einen Event ist wirklich perfekt. Man kann sich entscheiden mit alten und neuen Freunden zu schwatzen, oder wenn bevorzugt einen Spaziergang entlang des Zürichsee’s zu wählen, um die Stille zu geniessen.
Alles war sehr gut organisiert. Am Eingang bekam man drei Coins für Zigarren, drei Kärtchen für Drinks und eine Karte für Jetons, um im mobilen Casino, vom Grand Casino Baden zu spielen. Das Essen und die Weine waren kostenlos und man konnte soviel konsumieren wie man wollte. Die anwesenden Distributoren der Zigarren und Spirituosen-Marken hatten je einen Stand. Für die Zigarren waren Repräsentatnen für Brun del Ré, Camacho, Intertabak (Cohiba, Montecristo, Partagas), OSA, Patoro anwesend. Die Coins oder Karten konnten gegen die bevorzugetn Genussmittel eingetauscht werden. Da ich fast immer nur Kubanische Zigarren rauche, war ich interessiert mal Camacho, OSA und Patoro zu probieren. Am Ende rauchte ich meine eigenen, mitgebrachten Zigarren, Montecristo 520, EDL 2012. Die bevorzugten Getränke waren Wein und Mojito. Für die Unterhaltung sorgte eine Band mit karibischer Musik und das mobile Casino, in dem man mit Karten und Roulette spielen konnte. Ich versuchte mich in Roulette und gewann das zehnfache meines Einsatzes. Leider gab es dafür kein geld, sondern nur eine günstige Flasche Mövenpick-Champagner. Das Wetter war anfangs der veranstaltung gut, doch am Ende des Events suchte uns stürmischer Regen heim. Es goss kurzzeitig wie aus Kübeln.
Der Event war sehr gelungen und ich werde diesen nächstes Jahr, falls er stattfindet, wieder besuchen.

. My first Camacho. They said it’s the strongest in the line. The production-quality was very good, but the taste was a little bit to linear and boring for me. The extravagantly marketing style was much more better as this cigar.

Meine erste Camacho. Sie sagten mir, es sei die stärkste der Linie. Die Verarbeitungs-Qualität war sehr gut, doch der Geschmack war etwas zu linear und langweilig für mich. Das extravagante / aufwändige Marketing war viel besser wie diese Zigarre.

. The Patoro was my favourite of the three tasted cigares. It had a fine sweetnes and some complexity in flavours.
